Minnesota Opera 2022-23 Season The Song Poet The downside is that they tend to perform in smaller theaters where seating is not as cushy. For younger children, check out the Minnesota Opera’s Youth Opera program, which has historically performed shorter, all-ages program in English. Opera may be best suited to children who are experienced theatergoers and strong readers. It is good to keep in mind that while we share operas that may have themes that could interest children, children under six are not allowed in the hall. Once you get past the language barrier, opera is simply a cross between a musical and a classical orchestra performance. While operas tend to be more expensive and have longer performance times than other forms of theater, if you cut your teeth on children’s theater, it is not as daunting as its reputation suggests. What about attending with kids? I recommend giving it a try after your kids are able to sit through full length children’s theater performances. Perhaps most importantly, the seating is comfortable, so sitting for three hours did not leave me squirming. Second, it was just a really great story and the performers brought it to life. ![]() First, modern operas display subtitles for the audience, so you can always follow the story. When I got there, I was engrossed and fell in love. Opera’s tend to be long and, even when sung in English, it can be hard to follow a conversation sung soprano. I admit I was worried I would be bored and uncomfortable the first time I attended The Minnesota Opera. ![]() This report is part of a set of case studies and reports looking at the efforts of arts organizations that received Wallace Excellence Awards to reach new audiences and deepen relationships with current ones.Opera can be one of the more daunting art forms. Follow-up research identified barriers to making a return purchase, and the company has used these insights to adjust its marketing strategy to retain a number of those new attendees. ![]() The company, however, found that one or two positive experiences were not necessarily enough to turn most of these audience members into frequent patrons. After four seasons of the partnership, 1,114 households new to Minnesota Opera had redeemed their free tickets to attend a performance and 18 percent had paid to come back. To that end, he gave away tickets to Tuesday night performances during his radio show, an effort that met with an enthusiastic response. He had a large following among women in the target age group, was an opera lover, and could dispel the perception of the art form as too difficult or elitist to appeal to newcomers.
